"The Heart" is the RPM Records debut from Winnipeg-based Indigenous electronic artist and sonic experimenter Exquisite Ghost.
Hailing from Peguis First Nation, Exquisite Ghost's style melds urbanity and primal futurism into a fusion of hypnotic, sparse electronic and hip-hop tinged productions. Equally influenced by J Dilla, Steve Reich, and John "Mahavishnu" Mclaughlin, Exquisite Ghost elevates each minute element into a kinetic blend of influences and beat-based sounds.
A dual track, single release – The Heart (A Side) and The Heart (B Side) – The Heart is multifaceted, arresting, and visceral. The A Side is at once alien and familiar – lurching synths and sirens collide with stuttering vocalizations, organic percussion and an ever-changing rhythmic structure. The B Side is a flip-side of sorts, in more ways than one. Drawing from a similar sonic palette to that of A Side, Exquisite Ghost creates a more driving, steady, warehouse-ready track without sacrificing dynamic rhythms or an affinity for unsettling samples.
"The Heart is an air raid siren; it's a moment where I felt a particular energy this past winter. The Heart feels like Jimi Hendrix, Tony Williams and Zakir Hussein remixing each other live, making loud bass music together. The Heart is a moment; your breath as you begin sprinting for no reason other than sheer exhilaration. It is physicality of sound, the primal, Exquisite Ghost."
